Indian spinner Ravi Ashwin, who recently announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League, could become the first Indian player to feature in the Australian Big Bash League (BBL).

In his retirement statement, Ashwin mentioned that he's open to exploring opportunities with other franchises. He recently discussed a potential partnership with a team from the ILT20. Now, he is in talks with Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg regarding possible participation in a foreign league.

It’s been reported that Greenberg reached out to Ashwin after the spinner hinted at becoming an "explorer of the game around various leagues." This move could be significant for Australian cricket, with Ashwin’s first freelance stint likely to be in the BBL this December.

CA CEO Greenberg Eyes Ashwin for BBL Debut

Greenberg confirmed that he was the first to approach Ashwin about this opportunity and expressed confidence that it will lead to a deal.

"To get someone with Ashwin's credentials to come over here for the BBL will be great at so many levels. He's a champion cricketer who will bring a lot to the Big Bash and to our cricket summer," — Greenberg (as quoted by Cricbuzz).

Following the discussions, Greenberg will now consult with stakeholders and team management to finalize the move. With eight BBL teams available, Ashwin could become a marquee signing. Early speculation suggests he may join a Melbourne-based team, either the Renegades or the Stars, although this will depend on his availability and contract terms.

Ashwin’s Move Could Pave Way for More Indians in Global Leagues

Previously, Dinesh Karthik became the first Indian to make a major move to SA20, a global franchise league in South Africa. However, all SA20 teams are owned by Indian businessmen. This season, over 10 Indian players have registered for the SA20 auction — with names like Piyush Chawla and Siddharth Kaul among the well-known entrants.

If Ashwin plays in the BBL, it could open the door for more Indian players to join international leagues in the future possibly even veterans like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who are nearing retirement. The inclusion of Indian players could also significantly boost the BBL's global viewership, an area where the league is currently struggling..
